| #Prepper plant - Poison Ivy, Toxicodendron radicals |
Fav defensive & also offensive plant, poison ivy or Toxicodendron radicans.
Our urban farm has several defense perimeters set, the innermost made up of thorny yet beautiful wild climbing roses, food & medicinal vines and more. Across our outer perimeter we encourage poison ivy to grow, nice & thick.
Makes great ground cover and will climb high into the oaks & pines here. We all know the poem ‘leaflets three let it be, it’s poison ivy or poison oak’. However poison ivy can quickly disable an outer perimeter intruder trying to climb the fence.
Once the intruder brushes against poison ivy and wipes sweat or hair from their face they can be blinded as if hit by pepper spray. The beauty of poison ivy growing on outer perimeter is that you the homesteader are not as at risk for assault or liability exposure because the plant grows naturally in many places.
Doubly effective when planted with prickly pear cactus or other cactus as cactus spines & powerful oil Urushiol from poison ivy stop most intruders in their tracks & make them wish they’d never ventured near.
Poison ivy is a beautiful plant too, exhibiting bright red colors in spring & fall. The vine’s berries are a favorite of many birds.
A tea of the leaves in a spray bottle is as good as canned bear spray. Poison ivy has been maligned by many but a #prepper & #survivalistshould take advantage of this powerful plant.
Caution - you need to be careful when working with poison ivy or poison oak.
